The Freightliner Century is a Class 8 truck with a sloped aerodynamic hood that is produced by the American truck manufacturer Freightliner.
The Freightliner Century was introduced in 1995 (as a 1996 model) to replace the FLD series truck, although the FLD truck was produced until 2001. The Freightliner Century was renamed to the Freightliner Century Class S/T (which stands for Safety and Technology) for the 2000 model year. The Freightliner Century Class S/T was equipped with a driver-side airbag and improved seat mounts. This truck became the flagship truck of Freightliner after the FLD model was discontinued in 2001.
The Freightliner Century Class S/T had new design changes that included a new hood, windshield, and bumper that gave the truck a sleek and modern look. It also had an increased cooling capacity and better light distribution from the headlights.
The Freightliner Century Class S/T is the most advanced heavy truck in the Freightliner product line. This truck, which is available in a standard 120-inch configuration, is loaded with advanced systems that increase driver comfort and safety and maximize productivity.
The Freightliner Century is equipped with a range of engines, including the Caterpillar C13, Caterpillar C15, Caterpillar 3406E, Detroit Diesel MBE 4000, Detroit Diesel Series 60, Detroit Diesel DD13/15/16, Cummins ISX, and Cummins N14. The front end of the Freightliner Century features a new windshield that provides more cooling capacity for compatibility with the newer and hotter 2004 engines.
The three-piece bumper of the Freightliner Century Class S/T has also been redesigned and reshaped. The outer parts of the Freightliner Century Class S/T are still made of durable plastic that resists damage and features a chrome grille and integrated fog lights and amber marker lights.
In addition, the inner fender liners are now mounted on the hood itself instead of on the chassis. These liners protect the engine compartment.
Another new update to the Freightliner Century Class S/T is the redesigned sun visor. This external aerodynamic visor improves fuel economy and reduces replacement and repair time.
In the Freightliner Century Class S/T, the mesh level and intake area have been significantly increased to comply with the enhanced emission standards. To improve visibility, all lamps in the headlights and fog lights have been replaced with composite lamps.
In 2010, the Freightliner Century was replaced by the Freightliner Cascadia in North America. This truck remained in production for export sales until 2020.
